Chelsea have opened official talks to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen, according to reasonably reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder dazzled the football world with his talent and great performances in 2019/20, and has consequently been linked with a host of clubs around Europe. Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid have all been credited with interest in his services, but it seems Chelsea are about to beat them all to his signature. Having already snapped up Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, adding Havertz into the mix would likely reshape their attacking line completely.
Apparently, Havertz is excited with the ongoing project at Chelsea under the guidance of Frank Lampard and happy to come, and some reports suggested Werner had a helpinh hand in convincing his international teammate to follow him to Stamford Bridge.
Romano says a five-year contract is almost ready for him to sign with the personal terms agreed, but the transfer fee is still to be settled on by the two clubs. Leverkusen demand €80 million and Chelsea are willing to pay that much, but only if significant add-ons are included in that amount.
