Chelsea have intensified talks about a potential signing of Niklas Sule from Bayern Munich, according to The Athletic.
The 25-year-old defender, currently out of action with a torn muscle fibre, will be entering the final 12 months of his contract with the Bundesliga champions this summer, and Chelsea are looking to take advantage of the uncertainty about his future as they seek to strengthen their back line. Manager Thomas Tuchel wants to add a centre-back to his ranks, and following the confirmation that RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano will be joining Bayern, Sule has emerged at the top of the list for the London club.
Sule has so far made 32 appearances in all competitions for the Bavarians this term, scoring twice.
Chelsea have already strengthened their attacking lines with significant signings from Germany last year, namely Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. With Thiago Silva’s contract expiring and the experienced Brazilian set to turn 37 in September, there is need to add a high quality player.
On the other hand, it remains to be seen how Chelsea’s decision to join the proposed European Super League, which might cost them their place in all other competitions, would affect players who are offered a move to Stamford Bridge at the moment.
