Reigning Premier League champions Chelsea had perhaps harboured faint hopes of a heroic title defence until fairly recently, but defeats to Bournemouth and Watford in their last two games have brought into focus their stark reality – that they may not even be able to secure a top four finish this season.
The Blues currently occupy the valuable fourth spot, but only lead fifth place Tottenham by a single point. As the lowest scoring side in the top six, Chelsea are unsurprisingly concerned about their form, and are already looking ahead to the summer transfer window for improvements.
Marco Asensio is one man they hope could help turn their fortunes around for next season, according to the Mirror. The Real Madrid midfielder has made La Liga 18 appearances for Los Blancos this season, though half of those have come from the bench, and he has registered an impressive four goals and four assists.
With his game time not secure, and Real struggling to keep up with their league rivals this season, a rumoured £120m bid from Chelsea could well be enough to pry the 22-year old away from the Spanish capital.
