Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri believes the club will trigger the option of a one-year extension in the contract of Olivier Giroud.
The 31-year-old joined Chelsea in January last year on an 18-month deal which expires this summer. As relayed by Sky Sports, the Italian coach says he’s aware of the existence of the option and given that the striker is still needed at Stamford Bridge, he sees no reason not to trigger it.
Giroud himself recently expressed his concern about his future with the club as the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain this January saw his game-time significantly reduced, and he played only four times since. In total this season he started only seven games.
The World Cup winner made the move from Arsenal to Chelsea in search of regular football, and even though he hasn’t found it, the club are likely to exercise the option of an extension mainly due to the probable transfer embargo which still looms over their heads.
