Chelsea are prepared to pull out of the race to sign David Alaba this summer unless the Bayern Munich defender reduces his enormous wage demands, according to The Telegraph.
The London Blues are keen to form a partnership of Thiago Silva and Alaba in the heart of their defence. But while there doesn’t seem to be any problems with the 36-year-old Brazilian, the Austria international’s reported demands of £20 million per season, which comes down to just under £400,000 per week, have apparently already put a number of potential suitors off. That, as well as the fact that Real Madrid are also interested in his services, is what could eventually lead to Chelsea abandoning their interest.
At the moment, the highest-paid player at Stamford Bridge is midfielder N’Golo Kante, who receives around £300,000 per week.
If Chelsea’s move for the 29-year-old falls through, they could move for RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, who is also being eyed as a potential Alaba replacement by Bayern. Other names linked with the Premier League club are Bayern’s Niklas Sule ,Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konate and Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez.
