Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been told he will have to break the British transfer record if the club want to take Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich, according to the Daily Mail.
The Daily Mail claims that Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has already made contact with the German giants about a possible move for the talented Frenchman, however it is believed that no decision will be made until after Euro 2008.
Ribery, 25, had an impressive first season in Germany, helping Bayern Munich clinch a domestic league and cup double. Ribery was voted the clubs ‘Player of the Year’ and new manager Jurgen Klinsmann will not want to lose one of his star players so soon.
The Frenchman has emerged as one of Chelsea’s top transfer targets so far this summer and it looks as if Chelsea will continue their manager-less pursue of some of Europe’s top players.
It is yet to be revealed whether Ribery will wish to leave Germany after such a succesful first year and Chelsea may have to offer a large contract on top of the record breaking transfer fee.
