Chelsea have been linked with Ben Chilwell for some time now. There were reports suggesting they would make a move on that front in January but nothing happened just then. However, The Athletic claim things haven’t changed, and the Leicester left-back remains a priority for manager Frank Lampard.
Apparently, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, whose financial commitment to the club has been heavily questioned since he was denied a UK visa in 2017, is ready to back Lampard in the transfer market through two ‘marquee’ signings following the early acquisition of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. Money should not be a problem, given that the Londoners are due to cash in on last year’s sale of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, potentially rising to £150 million, as well as the deal which saw Alvaro Morata move to Atletico Madrid being made permanent for £48m. They also expect to ease their wage budget with potential departures of high earners like Willian and Pedro Rodriguez.
Apart from Chilwell, they are currently mulling over several attacking targets, such as Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz, RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner, Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Olympique Lyon’s Moussa Dembele.
