Guangzhou extended their unbeaten run to nine matches after a 3-1 win at Dalian Shide in Sunday’s Chinese Super League action.
Dalian, who are near the bottom of the table, would have been delighted with keeping their opponents goalless for the first 80 minutes as a stalemate looked likely.
But a crazy final 10 minutes saw four goals scored, with Cleo kickstarting the goalscoring when he netted after 80 minutes.
Zambian James Chamanga quickly responded for Dalian Shide to restore parity, but a pair of late strikes from Muriqui sealed the result.
Guangzhou’s victory mean they remain seven points clear of second-placed Beijing Guoan, who also won, 2-1 at home to Jiangsu Shuntian, thanks to a Xu Liang double.
Liaoning Hongyun, placed third in the league, were 1-0 home winners over Shaanxi Chanba with Zhao Junzhe netting a 66th minute winner while Julio de Leon’s injury-time winner gave Shandong Luneng a 2-1 win at the Chengdu Blades.
Zhu Jianrong and Li Peng both scored in the last 10 minutes as Qingdao Jonoon won 2-1 at home against Shanghai Shenhua while Ye Chongqiu also netted late as Nanchang Bayi defeated Hangzhou Lucheng 1-0.
Tianjin Teda defeated bottom-side Shenzhen Ruby 2-1 while Changchun Yatai and Henan Jianye played out a goalless draw.
