Thai Premier League runner-up Chonburi won the Kor Royal Cup on Sunday in a 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Buriram United.
This season’s Kor Royal Cup, between the Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners, was tied at 2-2 after 90 minutes.
Buriram dominated early, racing to a 2-0 lead after 33 minutes through goals from Theeratorn Boonmathan and Frank Acheampong.
But Chonburi’s Adul Lahso pulled one back on the stroke of half-time.
Chonburi were the better side in the second half and kept piling the pressure on Buriram. The effort was fruitful when Ludovick Takam equalised in injury time.
The game then went to spotkicks, with Japanese midfielder Kazuto Kushida the hero.
Chonburi chairman Wittaya Khunpluem told reporters: “We were grateful with this trophy which is to be praised for all the players throughout the game.”
“We also thank Chonburi fans. Everyone was cheering today, and fans have encouraged the team to win.”
