Tottenham are believed to be in advanced negotiations to sign Ajax and Denmark playmaker Christian Eriksen.
Tottenham are thought to have offered £8million for Eriksen, but the Dutch club are believed to want £12million.
However, the clubs are expected to come to an agreement before the transfer window shuts next Monday. The youngster could be one of the bargains of the transfer window.
Highly-rated
Christian Eriksen is one of the most highly-rated young playmakers in world football. The 21-year-old has been on the radar of scouts from a number of top clubs since the youngster was just 18 years of age.
In fact the attacking midfielder is so highly-rated in his homeland that he is considered the most talented player to have come out of Danish football since the Laudrup brothers in the 1980’s.
The likes of Manchester United and Liverpool have been credited with an interest in the Dane in previous transfer windows. However, the youngster always claimed that he wanted to stay in Amsterdam and develop his talent in the Eredivisie.
It now looks like he is ready to move up to one of Europe’s top leagues and complete a move to the Premier League. The youngster had stated in previous transfer windows that he did not feel physically strong enough to play in the English top-flight.
He has matured both physically and mentally in the last couple of years though and looks to be set to make the move to White Hart Lane. It seems that some fans of the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool are wondering why their club have not yet launched a bid for Eriksen.
Playmaker
Tottenham have a reputation as a club that likes their playmakers. The likes of Paul Gascoigne and further back in time Glenn Hoddle and Ossie Ardiles are heroes at White Hart Lane. Eriksen is definitely in the playmaker mould.
He is a player who operates in the number ten role behind the striker and create opportunities. His vision and passing abilities are his main strengths. Last season Eriksen also added goals to his game scoring ten goals in 33 Eredivisie appearances, as he helped Ajax to the Dutch league title.
Different
Eriksen is definitely not a direct replacement for Gareth Bale. He is a completely different sort of player. Bale relies on pace and power to be effective, while Eriksen is a player that relies on football intelligence.
Bale is thought to be close to moving to Real Madrid and it now looks like the world record move is inevitable. The Welshman will definitely be a loss to Spurs, but Eriksen is not a terrible replacement for Bale.
Spurs have been looking to strengthen their squad with attacking midfielders since it became apparent that Bale would not be at the club for much longer. It seems that Eriksen could be joined at the club by another highly-rated youngster in Argentinian international Erik Lamela.
Spurs are believed to have agreed a fee of around £30million for the attacking midfielder with his Italian club Roma and the youngster looks set to join Eriksen in Spurs new look team.
Business
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is regarded as one of the toughest negotiators in football. Levy usually manages to get a good deal for Spurs, whether that be when the club are buying or selling. If everything goes as expected then I think Spurs have done some great business this summer.
The signings of Roberto Soldado and Paulinho this summer already look like good ones. The prospective signings of wonderkids Eriksen and Lamela could fall into the same category, especially the signing of Eriksen.
Even if Spurs end up paying £12million for Eriksen then they have a bargain. Tottenham will only get the Dane for such a relatively small fee, as the Dane is entering the final year of his contract in Amsterdam.
The deal will be yet another coup for Levy if it comes off. Spurs just have to be wary that no other English clubs come in at the last minute and hijack the deal, like Chelsea did with Brazilian midfielder Willian.
In my opinion the signing of Eriksen is a far better one than that of Willian, especially for less than half the fee.
Potential
Christian Eriksen is currently a very good player, but he has the potential to go on and become a great player. If Tottenham manage to complete a deal before the transfer window shuts then they could have one of the bargains of the summer on their hands.
Will Christian Eriksen be a good signing for Tottenham?
