Manchester City and Manchester United are locked in the battle for FC Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, reports L’Equipe.
The Citizens are set to reignite their interest in the Frenchman as they search for a perfect defence partner for captain Vincent Kompany.
With neither Matija Nastasic nor Martin Demichelis impressing in that role, boss Manuel Pellegrini could decide to sign a high-profile centre-back before the January transfer window closes.
However, the Citizens could face a stiff competition from their local rivals Manchester United, who need replacements for both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
According to L’Equipe, the Red Devils had Mangala watched in the weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Benfica.
The only problem is that FC Porto are referring interested sides to the player’s €50 million release clause.
And while Manchester United are already out of the title chase, their local rivals remain 11/10 favourites for the Premier League trophy despite sitting one point behind leaders Arsenal.
