Clarke keen to keep hold of Long

West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Clarke has said that he will not sell Shane Long in January, ESPN understands.

The Republic of Ireland international, who scored his second and third goals of the season in Monday evenings 2-2 draw with Midlands rivals Aston Villa, is set to be out of contract at the end of the year though the Baggies have the option of extending his deal by a further year.

The club came close to selling the former Reading man to Hull City during the summer, and the Tigers and Stoke City are said to be interested in securing his services when the transfer window reopens.

He has appeared in nine of West Brom’s Premier League games so far this season, and is line for a starting berth when the side take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park in tomorrow’s late kick off.

Long is priced at 15/2 to get the first goal of the game.
