Former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio has officially joined Russian powerhouse Zenit St Petersburg on a two-year deal.
The experienced 32-year-old Italy international was a free agent after terminating his contract with Serie A champions by mutual consent earlier in the summer and was free to choose his next destination.
Marchisio was linked with a number of Europe’s top sides including PSG, AS Monaco, Nice, Benfica, Porto and the MLS side Montreal Impact.
In the end, he decided to move to Zenit to continue the club’s Italian connection which in the past included Domenico Criscito, Luciano Spalletti and Roberto Mancini.
Claudio Marchisio took it to Twitter to explain he has been attracted by the prestige of a great club like Zenit and the most ambitious project he was presented with.
Zenit will take part in the group stage of Europa League this season, competing in Group C together with FC Kobenhavn, Bordeaux and Slavia Prague.
