Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen have announced they have extended the contract of veteran striker Claudio Pizarro.
The 37-year-old had a deal until the end of the current season, but he has now signed a one-year extension after helping the club escape relegation to the second division.
Werder managed to secure Bundesliga survival thanks to a last-gasp winner over relegation rivals Eintracht Frankfurt on the final day of the season, and even though he failed to score in said match, Pizarro finished as team’s top scorer with 14 goals in 28 league appearances, which is an excellent record for a player in an advanced stage of his career.
The Peruvian striker returned for the third spell at Weserstadion last summer as he joined on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, and having played a key role this term, he will go down as one of the best footballers in the club’s history.
