Claudio Ranieri isn’t the right man for Inter

A week ago or so I wrote an article about whether Gian Piero Gasperini was the man to take Italian giants Inter forward.

In that article I stated I didn’t think he was and the Inter owner Massimo Moratti obviously agreed as he now sacked the hapless boss. Inter have replaced Gasperini with former-Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri.

Enthusiasm

The 59 year-old told Rai TV: “Inter are a great team. They have had a bad start to the season and I will have to talk to the team to understand why that was.

“I will have to bring enthusiasm and a change of gear in order to wake up the team. I cannot promise that we will win this or that but I believe this team has a lot to give and we must prove it.”

Roma

As soon as I heard that Ranieri was appointed as Inter boss I thought about his stint at Roma. He took over the Giallorossi and challenged Inter for the Serie A title in his first season but in his second season quit after a poor set of results.

Nearly

Claudio Ranieri has always been the nearly man of world football. He nearly took Chelsea to the Premier League title, he nearly won the Serie A title with Roma. Ranieri has never quite got the art of winning major trophies down.

The 59 year-old hasn’t been a complete failure as a boss as he has won some trophies. Ranieri can also count a number of promotions from lower divisions with teams like Fiorentina, Catania and Cagliari on his resume.

Resume

I’m sorry Inter fans but this isn’t a resume of a man who will get the Nerazzurri back to the top of Serie A. Ranieri is a bigger name boss than Gasperini but he is exactly the same sort of appointment. Ranieri was another cheap option taken by Massimo Moratti knowing that the club cannot afford to appoint a truly top class boss.

Likeable

I have nothing against Claudio Ranieri, he is a really likeable guy. However its this nicest not may have cost him in the past. At Chelsea everybody liked him and Chelsea became some people’s second team. That was because the Blues under Ranieri were never seen as a big threat to the established order.

Ranieri helped put Chelsea to were they are now but he couldn’t finish the job off. Like I said in my Gasperini article Italian head coaches don’t usually stay in their job for very long unless they are winning.

Just like Gasperini I can’t see Ranieri staying around in Milan for very long. Ranieri has signed a two-year contract but will most likely just prove a useful stopgap for the Italian giants.

Players

Inter have a decent squad of players and it shouldn’t be hard for Ranieri to get them winning. The players looked bemused by Gasperini’s tactics and couldn’t seem to grasped his ideas. Gasperini came with his set formation from his previous clubs but didn’t have the players to fit into that formation.

However Claudio Ranieri is more likely to pick a formation that suit’s the players. Ranieri is good at keeping players happy and man-management that’s his strengths as a boss.

Succeed

Inter are my favourite Italian team and they always will be. Watching them lose against Novara was a strange sensation. I was almost relieved as I knew that Moratti would get rid of Gasperini but annoyed because they were so poor.

I really hope that Claudio Ranieri can prove me wrong and win this seasons Scudetto. Unfortunately I just can’t see it happening. I can see Inter challenging but falling short, the story of Ranieri’s managerial career I’m afraid.

Can Claudio Ranieri win the Serie A title with Inter?
