Cleverley, Campbell earn England call-ups

Tom Cleverley and Frazier Campbell have been handed maiden call-ups in Stuart Pearce’s England squad to face the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Micah Richards has also been recalled to the first England squad since Fabio Capello’s departure but there are no places on the 25-man list for Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard or Andy Carroll.

Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who had been touted for his first senior call-up, remains in the England under-21s squad.

Manchester United youngster Cleverley was widely expected to be called up for the match at Wembley but the inclusion of Campbell, 24, is a surprise.

Pearce has selected a mix of senior and inexperienced players, with Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole all included. The caretaker boss has not named a captain in the squad released to the media on Thursday.

Unsurprisingly, 11 of the 25 players figure for the two frontrunners in the Premier League title race, Manchester United and Manchester City.

Oddly, there are three right-backs in the squad – Kyle Walker, Glen Johnson and the recalled Richards.
