France international Gael Clichy has signed a four-year deal with Manchester City, becoming the first of Arsenal’s high-profile departures.
Clichy, 25, underwent a medical at the Eastlands and then put pen to a reported seven-million-pound move on Monday, ending his eight-year stint with the Gunners.
The left-back had 12 months left on his contract at the Emirates but made it known he would not extend, forcing Arsenal to sell him now or lose him for nothing next July.
That allowed City boss Roberto Mancini to swoop in and bolster his squad ahead of the Sky Blues’ maiden Champions League campaign.
“I’m really happy to be joining such a great club,” Clichy said in a statement.
“I hope I can add to the quality we already have here because we have a fantastic squad who I believe will continue to get better.”
“I can’t wait to get started and I think anything is possible with this team.”
Clichy first arrived at Arsenal in 2003, having caught the eye of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger while still a teenager at French side Cannes.
He made 187 Premier League appearances for Arsenal and was part of Wenger’s team that lifted the league trophy after going unbeaten through the 2003/04 season.
The following year he won the FA Cup with Arsenal, in what would be the north London club’s last piece of silverware for six barren seasons.
“We would like to thank Gael for eight years of terrific service to Arsenal, during which time he gave absolutely everything for the club,” Wenger said on Arsenal’s official website.
“He has grown and developed so much since joining us in 2003, and has been a crucial part of the team over recent seasons.”
“Gael leaves with our respect and best wishes. We wish him the very best for his future career.”
Clichy’s defection is expected to be the first of many in a busy off-season transfer window at the Emirates.
Cesc Fabregas is expected to complete his long-awaited move to Barcelona this month.
Samir Nasri is being courted by City and Manchester United, while Robin van Persie and Manuel Almunia are reportedly unsettled.
