Romanian champions Cluj announced on Thursday the sacking of coach Sorin Cartu after he kicked down the visiting team dugout during a Champions League match at Basel.
Cartu’s moment of madness came as his side were crashing out of the competition on Tuesday on the back of a 1-0 loss to the Swiss side.
He repeatedly kicked the side of the shelter, smashing through the plastic structure and had to be restrained from causing further damage by another team official sitting next to him.
“The values and image of our club cannot be associated with the actions of coach Sorin Cartu and that is why we have decided to part ways,” a club press statement said.
Cartu will be replaced by another member of the Cluj coaching staff, Alin Minteuan.
UEFA are investigating the incident.
“A disciplinary case has been opened against CFR 1907 Cluj for the improper conduct of coach Sorin Cartu during the UEFA Champions League Group E game against FC Basel 1893 in Basel,” a UEFA statement confirmed.
The case will be heard next Tuesday.
