PSV have sacked Fred Rutten as coach and hired Phillip Cocu as his replacement until the end of the season, the Eredivisie club announced.

Rutten was sacked after overseeing a run of three successive defeats at the Eindhoven club, including a 3-1 reverse at NAC Breda on Sunday.

Rutten’s assistant, Erik ten Hag, stood down after the news was announced on Monday.

Cocu, who had been a part of Rutten’s coaching staff, has been appointed coach on an interim basis and will work alongside former team-mate Ernest Faber.

PSV have slipped to fourth in the Eredivisie, four points behind leaders AZ Alkmaar.
