Cole backs Man Utd to reclaim title

Former Manchester United striker Andrew Cole insists the club will reclaim the Premier League title.

The Red Devils suffered final day heartache in a thrilling end in May, with Sergio Aguero scoring an injury-time winner to clinch a miraculous comeback against QPR and seal a debut Premier League title for Manchester City

But, Cole believes having the title slip out of United’s hands in the final seconds of the season is enough incentive to drive the team into a successful 2012/13 campaign.

“You want to win something every single season so when you don’t your time off is naturally going to drag a bit. But they’ll come back doubly determined to do well this season,” Cole told the club’s website.

“When you’ve lost the league you want to get straight back on the horse, so to speak, and set about regaining that trophy.

“As soon as last season finished they would have been thinking about this season. They’ll be thinking about how they can win it back, where it went wrong.”

Some have called for Sir Alex Ferguson to radically change the squad, with the more underperforming players being shipped out, but Cole has dismissed this notion.

Instead the former striker has citied the narrow nature of City’s triumph in relation to their extensive squad investment as proof that United are as strong as ever.

He continued: “Yes, we lost the league, but that doesn’t mean we need an overhaul.

“Manchester City spent almost 300 million pounds to reach this level and only won the league on goal difference.

“I’m not disputing they were the best team last season – you can never argue with the league table – but they’ve had to spend a lot of money to even get near us. That’s why I think we’re in good shape.

“And whoever the manager signs between now and the start of the season will only improve that squad.”
