CONCACAF Gold Cup wrap: Jamaica thrash Grenada

Jamaica kicked off their CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign with a 4-0 win over Grenada in California on Monday to move to the top of Group B.

Luton Shelton opened the scoring at The Home Depot Center after 21 minutes, and Ryan Johnson doubled their lead six minutes before the break.

Demar Phillips and Keammar Daley were on target in the second half to complete the victory, and Johnson said the strong defensive effort was an ideal way to start the competition.

“I want to help Jamaica go as far as we can in this tournament,” Johnson said.

“We did the most important thing, and that was to keep a clean sheet.”

In Group B’s other match on Monday, nine-man Guatemala hung on to claim a point with a 0-0 draw in their clash with Honduras.

Guatemala had defender Gustavo Cabrera sent off just after the hour mark for a second bookable offence, and substitute Henry Medina was shown red after 79 minutes, picking up two cautions in his seven minutes on the field.

Group B action resumes on Friday in Miami with Jamaica facing Guatemala and Grenada taking on Honduras.
