Confederations Cup preview: Italy – Brazil

The match between Italy and Brazil could be the final of any major tournament, but in this case, what is at stake is a spot in the semi finals of the Confederations Cup.

Italy need a win and a bit of luck to ensure that they will join the best four teams in South Africa. Even in case of victory, the Azzurri still risk getting eliminated if Egypt beat the USA. Things didn’t go quite as planned against the Egyptians and not many will favor the Italians to stand much of a chance against the five-times world champions.

Even Brazil aren’t certain of a semi final spot yet, despite winning their first two games. If they lose and Egypt win, they might just get knocked out on goal record. However, the Seleçao are in the best position of these three sides and should be professional enough to do what needs to be done.

Italy and Brazil have a rich history of direct encounters, including two meetings in World Cup finals. Brazil went on to win both, in 1970 and 1994.

The match is to be played at Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld Stadium at 8:30pm local time. Benito Archundia of Mexico has been appointed as referee.
