Confidence high at Wolves

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy believes his side’s shock victory over Manchester United last weekend will provide them with the inspiration they need to win away at Arsenal.

Manchester United lost their unbeaten record at Molineux last Saturday evening and McCarthy now has his sights set on upsetting Arsenal at the Emirates this weekend.

“It has lifted everyone round the place,” said McCarthy.

“A lot of players were not here this week. The atmosphere around the place has been good, but it is even better when you beat top teams.”

“We are feeling confident. But they are the top side – on their day they can slap anyone.”

Arsenal host Wolves still reeling from their extraordinary draw against Newcastle last week. Arsene Wenger’s men were 4-0 up inside 30 minutes but Newcastle somehow managed to come back and claim a 4-4 draw.

And McCarthy said although Arsenal can have no complaints about that result, he is focusing on his side’s efforts to stay in the league and that results against the teams around Wolves will be crucial come the end of the season.

“Arsenal were masters of their own downfall. When I consider we have never had a penalty in the Premier League how Newcastle got that one I don’t know,” he said.

“But we have to get points off Birmingham, Blackpool and West Ham (as well as Arsenal).”

A groin strain prevents Dave Edwards playing at the Emirates and Stephen Hunt is still nursing a calf injury but should be fit to return for next Sunday’s derby at West Brom.
