The Croatian centre-back made a total of 185 appearances for the Merseysiders over a spell of six years, scoring eight goals. His time at Anfield has been a mix of ups and downs and his performances split opinions among the club’s supporters, but everyone at Liverpool, including manager Jurgen Klopp, acknowledge the contribution he made during the the club’s long climb back to winning trophies. The bottom line is, he leaves as a Premier League champion and a Champions League holder.
Liverpool will receive a reported fee of around £11 million for his services, having agreed to let him move to Russia a year before his contract expired.
It remains to be seen whether the Reds dip into the market to fill the gap, with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip ready to compete for the spot alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of defence and several academy products eager for a first-team chance. If Klopp decides to promote someone, it will likely be one of Nathaniel Philips (23), Ki-Jana Hoever or Sepp van den Berg (both 18).
