A riot during a Congolese soccer match on Monday left 13 people dead, according to Radio Okapi, a station funded by the United Nations.
During the match between Socozaki and Nyuki System in the violence-ravaged North Kivu province, angry crowds panicked toward exits after police fired shots in the air to calm the people. The dead were crushed or suffocated, most of them children.
Radio Okapi reported that allegations of a player using witchcraft in the game caused the crowd into a frenzy, but regional governor Julien Mpalaku did not say what caused the riot.
