Connor begs for Wolves to believe

Wolverhampton manager Terry Connor has urged his players and the fans to ‘keep believing’ that they can avoid relegation.

Wolves were thrashed 5-0 at home by Manchester United on Sunday but the stand-in manager remains confident the club will be in the Premier League next season despite suffering a third-straight loss.

“We’ve got nine more games to play,” Connor said.

“We go to Norwich next week, Bolton at home the week after.”

“We’re on 22 points which is the same as Wigan, same as QPR, so we’re looking forward to trying to make sure that next week we’re competitive again and try and take something from the Norwich game, play Bolton next and then take it game by game and try and eke out enough points to get above that dotted line.”

Wolverhampton are currently bottom of the league on goal difference and were completely dismantled by United, although Connor maintained the home side started strongly.

“I thought for the first 20 minutes till they scored from the corner it was very, very even,” Connor said.

“I think we probably had the best chance in that opening 20 minutes and our game plan if you like we set out to play was working really well.”

“It was very disappointing to concede from the corner which we’d spoke about all week.”

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson did not get carried away after the huge victory, although it meant his side is now four points clear at the top of the league ahead of Manchester City.

“The scoreline makes it look comprehensive, it wasn’t really, but our finishing was good,” Ferguson said.

“The number of goals could be significant by the end of the season.”
