After weeks of negotiation, delays, and constant assurances from the media and the player’s agent that he would sign for Milan, it finally came true. Conti will sign his contract tomorrow and become a Rossoneri player.
The Transfer
Needless to say, the transfer wasn’t an easy one. Atalanta needed weeks to find a replacement for Conti, and they only just found one in the form of Timothy Castagne. Conti’s agent made numerous rash statements regarding the deal, assuring that it was certain weeks before the closing. Percassi certainly wasn’t happy with how it went down, but he had to respect the player’s wishes, so the transfer eventually went through.
Despite higher offers from Inter, Conti opted to join Milan instead. Milan will give Atalanta €24 million and Matteo Pessina, a young midfielder with loads of potential. Whether the fee was warranted, it had to be done in order for the transfer to be finally completed. The Italian will sign a five year contract with the Rossoneri for a little over €2 million a year, a pretty good salary for a relative newcomer in the Serie A. It was a drawn out saga, not as long as Donnarumma’s, but it still experienced numerous delays as Atalanta scrambled to find a replacement right-back.
With a sort of swap of players from Milan to Atalanta and vice versa (Vido, Pessina, Kessie, Conti), it seems as though Milan have depleted Atalanta of some of their key players, reducing their competition for next year’s goal of qualifying for the Champions League.
The transfer brings Milan’s tally up to seven, an incredible number that not even the most optimistic of Milan fans would have expected at this stage in the transfer window.
The Player
Now that we’ve talked all about the deal, let’s talk about the player. Conti is a dynamic fullback, and he’s known for his intelligence and offensive prowess, scoring eight goals and assisting five this season. At just 23 years of age, he has plenty of potential. All of Milan’s signings this year have been under the age of 26, and Conti even participated with the U21 squad this year in the Euros (he participated in the qualifying stages prior to turning 22 and thus was eligible to play).
Along with Ricardo Rodriguez, Milan could finally have a pair of good fullbacks, something they have lacked since the times of Maldini. With their crossing aptitude and Andre Silva’s knack for scoring headers, they could form a deadly duo in attack and provide some much needed movement on the flanks.
Besides his offensive skill, Conti also provides defensive stability, locking down his targets. His tackles are great, and he was a huge part of Atalanta’s success this season, helping drive them to the Europa League. Look for him to impress and fill a much needed gap in the Milan roster next year.
Conti’s love for Milan is certainly apparent, and he stated that as soon as heard of Milan’s interest, he was no longer interested in any other club. Unlike a certain other Milan player (cough, cough, Donnarumma), Conti actually postponed his vacations in Ibiza to fly in to Milanello. The Italian will get a chance to live his dreams and play alongisde a talented roster at the San Siro.
Conti is a much needed addition, and he’s one Milan fans have been waiting a long time for. Well, rejoice. Conti is finally here, and I have no doubt he’ll do great things under Montella’s leadership at the San Siro.
