Controversial VAR penalty decision in Everton’s win over Crystal Palace (Video)

Before VAR came into football, it was widely believed that the introduction of technology and video reviews would soon significantly reduce, if not eradicate, the controversies surrounding refereeing decision which plagued the game so much. However, practice has proved otherwise.

On Saturday, Manchester United were awarded a penalty against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League AFTER the final whistle had already gone, and this situation was eventually ruled the same way in Everton’s triumph over Crystal Palace.

There can be no doubt that the ball, headed by Everton left-back Lucas Digne, touched the hand of Joel Ward, but it really seems that the Palace defender had absolutely no time to remove the hand from it’s path. Many believe decisions like this actually encourage players to aim for defenders’ hands or arms inside the penalty box.

Judge for yourselves.
