Gremio has booked its place in the second round of the Copa Libertadores after posting a 2-0 win over Atletico Junior of Colombia.

The win means Gremio join their opponents in the round of 16.

The Brazilians went ahead in the 33rd minute courtesy of midfielder Lucio, with striker Borges doubling Gremio’s lead on the hour via his head.

The result means Leon de Huanuco of Peru are now out of contention for the next stage, along with Oriente Petrolero who are anchored to the foot of the group table.

Elsewhere, Ecuador’s Emelec kept their hopes of progressing alive after recording a 0-0 stalemate with Jorge Wilstermann of Bolivia.

The Ecuadorians are now one point behind Jaguares of Mexico in Group 6 with one round of fixtures remaining.

Chile’s Universidad Catolica and Velez Sarsfield of Argentina also fought out a 0-0 draw, which keeps both sides in contention to move into the round of 16.

Catolica is second on the group stands with eight points while their rivals are in third with seven points with Venezuela’s Caracas sitting atop Group 4.
