Santos’ mercurial playmaker Neymar turned from hero to villain in his side’s 3-2 win over Chilean giants Colo Colo in the Copa Libertadores.
The Brazil international’s needless red card was a sour note to the result – Santos’ first win this campaign.
Neymar, 19, who is being courted by English Premier League giants Chelsea, scored a fine solo goal – after Elano and Danilo da Silva had put the side two ahead – but collected a second yellow card for his subsequent goal celebration.
The Chileans, however, pulled back two goals late on in the game courtesy of strikes from Patricio Jerez and Diego Rubio.
Colo Colo’s loss has allowed Cerro Porteno to leapfrog them into second in Group 5 after they posted a 2-0 defeat over Deportivo Tachira.
Defending Copa champions Internacional spurned the chance of booking an early place in the final 16, after they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Chiapas of Mexico, who move into second place in Group 6 above Emelec of Ecuador.
Nacional defeated Fluminense 2-0 thanks to a brace from striker Uruguay under-20 international Santiago Garcia, while Venezuelan league champions Caracas came from behind to beat Union Espanola of Chile 2-1 and move top of Group 4 temporarily.
