Palmeiras closed in on a Copa Sudamericana final berth after defeating Goias 1-0 in the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday.

Palmeiras had overcome another Brazilian side, Atletico Mineiro, in the previous round and they again found themselves up against competition from their homeland in the semi.

Struggling in the Brazilian Serie A this season, Goias have enjoyed a dream run in South America’s premier?club competition this season, though that is now under threat after Marcos Assuncao struck in the 49th minute to?give visiting Palmeiras the advantage heading into their home leg next week.

The winner of this tie will face either LDU Quito of Ecuador or Argentina’s Independiente in the final.
