(GSM) – Corinthians are two points closer to the top of the Brazilian Serie A following a 3-0 win over Sao Paulo while Fluminense were held to a 2-2 draw at Vasco da Gama.

The city derby between Corinthians and Sao Paulo had a lot at stake for both teams as the home side battle for the championship while Sao Paulo are trying to limit the damage in a disastrous season.

The opening goal came after 22 minutes and was scored by Elias, who would also score Corinthians’ second just before the break. When Jucilei added a third in the 71st minute, the match was all but decided.

Leaders Fluminense had a tough night at Vasco da Gama, despite taking a sixth-minute lead through Gum. Eder Luis leveled the score in the 37th minute and Fagner completed Vasco’s turn-around just after half time.

Fortunately for the visitors, Julio Cesar found the target for 2-2 near the hour mark to keep a two-point advantage over their nearest rivals.
