The English FA have already stated that the next England boss will be English but I think they need to reconsider that.
As I wrote recently English bosses are few and far between. Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that the England job would interest him.
Interest
When asked if he was interested in the post he replied: “Why not?”
“I would like to do it in the future, to have this kind of experience.
“I have never been the coach of a national team. To manage the national team and manage a club is different.
“Maybe [Tottenham manager Harry] Redknapp doesn’t like foreign coaches for the national team, but if you ask me about England, I can say ‘Why not?'”
Winner
The Italian really is a winner. He is part of a rare breed of people who have won the European Cup as both player and manager. He doesn’t like losing; according to reports he does everything to analyst his side’s defeats, which to be fair to him are rare.
Achievements
Carlo Ancelotti has achieved everything he can in at club level. Maybe the Italian would fancy the challenge of winning honours in international football.
He will also know a lot about the England team from managing players like Ashley Cole, John Terry and Frank Lampard. I’m sure he would love to add a European Championship or World Cup win to his impressive CV.
Different
Ancelotti has great experience at club level but Fabio Capello has proved in his time as England boss that international football is very different. Capello has struggled to be able to get his message across.
Language
A lot of people have put Capello’s problems down to him not being able to speak the language fluently. His English is ok but he doesn’t by any means seem fluent. Ancelotti’s English seems far better by comparison.
Foreign
The arguments against another foreign boss don’t make much sense. One of the key arguments is that foreign coaches don’t feel the same passion for the team. That may be true but you don’t have to feel passion to do a good job.
Passion isn’t usually the biggest quality needed when managing a football team. Intelligence and tactical nous is more important than passion. As an Englishmen I wouldn’t mind another foreign coach being appointed as long as it was the right man for the job. Could Ancelotti be that man? I’m not sure but he has already proved himself as a top boss.
Chelsea
Ancelotti has previously stated that he wants to remain at Stamford Bridge for the long-haul. He probably feels that until he has won the Champions League he has unfinished business with the Blues. He only joined Chelsea last summer, so I’m sure it would be a while before he considers leaving the champions.
Would Ancelotti be a good choice for next England manager?
