Tottenham striker Jermaine Defoe could be the subject of an ambitious bid from Premier League new boys Reading, reports The Metro.
Defoe – who was selected in England’s Euro 2012 squad, but didn’t make much of an impact – has had speculation about his future at White Hart Lane for quite some time now.
With Andre Villas-Boas now in charge at Tottenham, it remains to be seen where he stands, but if he is to become available, Reading are interested in securing his services.
The newly promoted club have already signed Pavel Pogrebnyak – who scored plenty of goals while on loan at Fulham last season – and they see Defoe as the ideal partner for him.
With a £5m price tag being mentioned, Reading believe it would be money well spent as Defoe is a proven Premier League goalscorer.
In the end, it could all come down to whether Villas-Boas has plans to keep the striker. If he does, then the 29-year-old may want to fight for his place at White Hart Lane.
However, if he is told he is able to move on, Reading could become one of many options for him.
Many clubs, both in England and abroad, are bound to be interested in securing Defoe’s signature.
A fascinating few weeks lie ahead for the former West Ham United striker.
