Reports this morning suggest that Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos could be heading out of the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.
Ramos’ brother and agent Renee has admitted there has been interest from abroad in signing his sibling.
Doubts
Renee Ramos told the People: “ Sergio merits better treatment at Real because of the work he has done and his quality,”
“It is normal that his talent has been recognised by foreign clubs. We have received calls and inquiries but it is in the hands of Real.”
From that statement it seems that Ramos maybe unsettled in the Spanish capital. I think most people in Madrid would think of Sergio Ramos as one of the first names on the Real teamsheet but now there are doubts about his future at the club.
Unhappy
The Spanish international believed that he was entitled to a major pay rise this summer. According to reports in Spain however Real have refused to give him the rise he required. And now it seems that the World Cup winner is considering seeking pastures new.
Quality
Sergio Ramos is a versatile performer. He has performed reliably and consistently for a long time in both the Real and Spanish teams. Although considered to be an attacking full-back he can also play in central defence.
His defensive qualities have been questioned in the past but in recent seasons they have improved and he has became a more complete player. The former-Sevilla star would be a good addition to any squad in Europe.
England
There are only a few teams in Europe who would be able to afford to sign Ramos and two of those are in the Premier League. In the past Ramos has been linked with big money moves to both Chelsea and Manchester City.
City’s bitter-rivals Manchester United are also believed to be interested in signing the Spaniard. If Ramos does leave the Bernabeu then England is his only viable destination.
All the big English clubs look set to spend big this summer with new rules set to come into place on finances next year.
It will be difficult for Sergio Ramos to move elsewhere if Real Madrid aren‘t prepared to meet his wages demands. Only the likes of big spending Manchester City and ever-ambitious Chelsea would be willing to give him a bigger pay packet than Los Blancos.
Negotiation
I’m sure the speculation over his future won’t harm Ramos’ hand in contract negotiations. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if all the speculation was created by his camp to try to get more money from the Real Madrid hierarchy.
Important
Sergio Ramos is an important player for both his club side and his national side. Since his arrival as a teenager from Sevilla he has became a Real Madrid icon. No man is bigger than the club though, especially when we are talking about Real Madrid.
Replacement
Sergio Ramos isn’t irreplaceable but he will hard to replace after being at Real for so long. I’m sure however Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho will be able to find a replacement and he already has a right-back in the shape of Alvaro Arbeloa.
If Sergio Ramos does leave Real Madrid this summer I believe they will be weaker for his loss. They will not only be losing a player but they would also be losing a leader and an icon. I somehow doubt that the defender will be leaving the Bernabeu this summer though and I suspect he may yet be given a new contract by Real this summer.
