Upon being informed that Bayern Munich would not be triggering the option of turning his loan from Barcelona into a permanent deal this summer, Philippe Coutinho reportedly contacted Liverpool to see if there was any chance of a return to his former club. Liverpool, however, made it perfectly clear they had no interest whatsoever in re-signing their once best player.
Presuming the report by the Mirror is true – how the tables have turned.
In 2017, Coutinho put in a tremendous effort to force a ‘dream move’ from Anfield to Barcelona, including a transfer request 24 hours before the new season started. Liverpool initially resisted, but in the end they only delayed his departure by six months.
They may have needed him at the time, but they used the money well by purchasing defender Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Jurgen Klopp’s team gained a perfect balance and never looked back.
Now, it’s quite obvious that a move back would be much more desired by the Brazilian than the reigning European and world champions. In a moment when money is tight for everyone, there is hardly any to be spent on a player who had hoped to give his best years elsewhere.
