Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle believes Arsenal will renew their interest in defender Gary Cahill in January.

With his deal set to expire next June, a number of clubs attempted to bid for Cahill’s services this before the transfer window slammed shut in August.

Those clubs included Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, who put forward a bid that Bolton then deemed as ‘derisory’.

Reported to have been in the region of seven million pounds, it was instantly dismissed despite the fact that the defender’s contract status is currently unresolved.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of his team’s visit to the Emirates in the English Premier League on Saturday, Coyle said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if they came back.”

“Arsene has always said he is an admirer of Gary Cahill. But the clubs never agreed a fee.”

Now set to face the club that sought to sign him in August, some believe that the Bolton defender will use games such as these as an opportunity to put himself in the shop window.

But Coyle believes this is not the case, stating that Cahill has already done more than enough to underline his many abilities: “Gary has nothing to prove,” he said.

“He is a top performer, who is set for a glittering career.”
