Owen Coyle was delighted with the impact of Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander after his Bolton side thumped Newcastle 5-1 on Saturday.

The pair each scored twice and Lee Chung-Yong was also on target as Bolton moved up to fourth in the Premier League.

And as well as saluting their quality in front of goal, Coyle was pleased with his strikers’ workrate as Chris Hughton’s men were soundly beaten.

“I asked them Davies and Elmander to do more work without the ball and you saw that today,” Coyle said.

“You saw them work really hard for the ball and we all had such a strong work ethic and that was good as this is a tough league with a lot of quality.”

“We started well and were on the front foot from an early stage and this is a valuable three points.”

Kevin Nolan, a former Bolton favourite, handled in the box to gift Davies his first goal from the penalty spot and Jose Enrique’s trip on Davies late on led to another penalty, which was duly converted by the Wanderers striker.

Coyle added: “I felt the penalties were correct. The first one was a clear handball as far as I was concerned.”

“I am delighted with the result and with my players – nobody will deny us the three points.”

“Newcastle are a good side and they have a threat with Andy Carroll and Shola Ameobi. They are top quality players but we were worthy of the three points.”
