Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best players of his generation and current holder of the Ballon d’Or award. However, according to Sky Sports and various other news outlets, Italian giants Juventus could be about to sign the Real Madrid star in a deal reportedly worth around £88million.
If Juventus manage to complete the deal, it would no doubt be one of the biggest in the history of recent transfer windows. Not mainly due to the fee, more due to the profile of player moving clubs.
Real Madrid have a tough decision to make
Real Madrid has been linked with a number of attacking players this summer, including PSG pair Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, as well as Chelsea forward Eden Hazard.
However, to fund those sorts of deals without falling foul of Financial Fair Play rules would be difficult. The possible fee of £88million would undoubtedly give the Spaniards more room for manoeuvre in signing a big-name forward this summer.
The fact that Ronaldo is the twilight of his career would also be taken into consideration, even though he looks as fit as ever. If Los Blancos leave it much longer to sell the forward, they are unlikely to get much of a fee for him.
However, on the other hand, this Cristiano Ronaldo we are talking about. The 33-year-old is the clubs highest ever goalscorer with 450. He has won the Champions League on four occasions with the club, while also winning two domestic titles.
Ronaldo will go down in history as a Real Madrid icon. His goals, influence and sheer determination will be impossible to replace. It is a tough decision for the club from the Spanish capital to make.
Ronaldo may fancy conquering Italy
I remember Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic talking about conquering Italy, Spain and England. Ronaldo has already made a massive impact in both La Liga and the Premier League.
Maybe he would fancy a new challenge in a different league such as Serie A. Even at 33-years-old, Ronaldo looks like he is peak physical condition. He could play on for at least two more years at the top of the game.
A change of position to a more central role seems to have helped his game. It also means that he has to do less running, which will help prevent fatigue, as even Ronaldo is human. I am sure the Portuguese forward would like to add a Serie a title-winners medal to his extensive collection. The Bianconeri are unsurprisingly favourites to win the Serie A title next season at odds of 4/6.
A signal of intent from Juventus
Juventus have been there or thereabouts in the Champions League latter stages in recent seasons. However, they never seem to be able to lift the trophy. The signing of Ronaldo would be a big signal of intent from the Bianconeri that not only are they intent on retaining their crown as Italian champions, but also winning Europe’s elite competition next season too.
Ronaldo would also raise their profile as a club. Juventus are already a massive club. However, branding-wise signing Ronaldo would be a dream come true, as they would make a fortune in merchandising alone.
The forward was heavily linked with a move away from the Spanish capital last summer. However, it seems he is now closer than ever to leaving Real Madrid. If Juventus does manage to get this deal over the line, it could prove to be a major coup for the Bianconeri, even if Ronaldo is 33 years of age he is still an outstanding player with a great hunger to be successful.
