Liverpool goal scorer Glen Johnson admitted Roy Hodgson’s pre-match criticism of him was fully deserved.
Reds manager Hodgson publicly criticised Johnson in the lead-up to the game, claiming he was not satisfied with his performances.
But Johnson responded in style as he opened the scoring against a poor West Ham side before Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodriguez completed the 3-0 rout.
“I didn’t need to hear from the boss to know I was not at my best. I am an honest person and know I can do better,” Johnson said.
“I haven’t been at my best so it was nice to score a goal. I have missed a few matches recently through injury so it’s good to get back and amongst the goals.”
“We tried to set our stall out early and attack them and we started very well. It’s always nice to get a goal.”
Hodgson added: “I am really pleased with the performance, we really deserved our three-goal lead.”
“We were very professional in the second half and one of the most important things for me was the clean sheet.”
“The Johnson stuff was a storm in a teacup. I am more than pleased with him and very pleased he scored today.”
