(GSM) – Cruzeiro are the new leaders in the Brazilian Serie A following a 1-0 victory over previous leaders Fluminense.

Fluminense began the day in first place and a win over Cruzeiro would have left them much closer to winning the championship.

But it was not meant to be for ‘Flu’ at Belo Horizonte’s Joao Havelange stadium, where Wellington Paulista scored what turned out to be the only goal after 14 minutes.

With nine rounds to go, Cruzeiro are now two points ahead of Fluminense.

Third-placed Corinthians suffered a 3-4 home defeat by relegation candidates Atletico Goianiense.

Leandro Castan scored the opener for Corinthians in the third minute but Juninho (19th), Gilson (38th) and Marcao (45th, 66th) then handed the away side a shocking 1-4 lead.

William Morais and Thiago Heleno then scored to give Corinthians new hope, but the guests held on to secure three vital points in their battle for survival.

The João Havelange stadium isn’t located in Belo Horizonte but in Uberlândia instead. Belo Horizonte’s both stadiums are closed due to being rebuilt for the World Cup.
