Alan Curbishley has resigned as manager of West Ham citing the reason as being his lack of involvement in the transfer decisions made over the past few days.
As with Kevin Keegan at Newcastle, a manager’s position is clearly untenable if he has no say in who plays for the club. Curbishley told the BBC that the situation amounted to, “a breach of trust and confidence meaning I had no option but to leave.”
West Ham accepted his resignation, “in the best interests of all concerned.”
Despite winning two of their first three games there were murmurings amongst some of the West Ham fans about Curbishley and some of them will not be disappointed to see him leave. Others will realise that Curbishley is a lifelong West Ham fan and would have done anything for the club.
It will be a sad day for Curbishley to walk out on West Ham, the club he loves.
A shortlist of potential new managers will be drawn up as soon as possible by the club.
