A late goal from James Holland wasn’t enough for the Australian Under-20 team to avoid a 2-1 defeat by the Czech Republic at the World Youth Championship.

After a goalless first half at Port Said Stadium, the Czechs took the lead through Michael Rabusic after five minutes in the second.

Tomas Pekhart converted a spot kick to add second in the 89th minute, after which Holland’s goal for 2-1, from the penalty spot in minute 90, couldn’t make much of a difference.

Australia’s Ryan McGowan was handed a second yellow card in the 88th minute.

On Wednesday, the Australians face their next task against Costa Rica, who lost 5-0 to Brazil in their tournament opener. The Czechs play their second match against Brazil.
