The Republic of Ireland will have to do without influential winger Damien Duff for their World Cup qualifiers with Bulgaria and Italy.

The Newcastle United player injured his hamstring two days ahead of their first of two highly crucial qualifiers, and is not expected to feature in either one.

Duff is one of Ireland’s most experienced and vital players, having earned 72 caps since 1998.

Ireland are currently in second place in Group 8, with ten points from four games. Italy have the same amount of points but scored one goal more.
