David Moyes celebrates ten years at Everton

Everton boss David Moyes celebrates ten years in charge of the Toffee’s on Wednesday.

The Scot’s Everton side face arch-rivals Liverpool this evening with a chance to leapfrog the Reds.

A victory over Liverpool would prove the perfect anniversary present for the former-Preston boss.

Stability

David Moyes has brought tremendous stability to the club in his decade in charge. The Scot has transformed the club from perennial relegation strugglers into a good top ten Premier League outfit. What’s more impressive is that he has managed that transformation with relatively small resources.

Resources

The financial resources at Everton are virtually non-existent. The club, unlike other big clubs have decided to cut their cloth according to their bank balance. Moyes and Everton chairman Bill Kenwright have refused to put the club in financial danger but have managed to produce a very competitive team.

Moyes has never really had a fortune to spend and has done really well so far. If he was given resources who knows what he could do with the club. Although some pundits have suggested that he wouldn’t spend money wisely if it was given to him.

Bargains

I would have to disagree with that theory. Like most managers David Moyes has had his hits and misses in the transfer market but he has definitely had more hits than misses. For every Per Kroldrup there is a Phil Jagielka, for every Diniyar Bilyaletdinov there is a Tim Cahill.

David Moyes has brought players into the club that have improved the team on a consistent basis. I have to say I have had my doubts about some of his signings but most have proved me wrong. One of the latest signings Darron Gibson could be another shrewd signing by Moyes.

Everton fans tend to be sceptical about new signings, due to the many years of ups and downs of the club. However there has been a swing in opinion over the Irish midfielder and he is a typical Moyes signing. He signed for a small fee by Premier League standards but he adds something to the team.

Just the sort of player that David Moyes has added to the Everton squad in his ten years at the club. I’m sure he would love to spend £10million on a midfielder but the club haven’t got it, so he manages to buy the best quality he can to improve his squad.

Praise

Moyes work at Everton has not gone unnoticed even his Premier League counterparts have decided to praise him this week. Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp told Sky Sports: “I like to see people stay at clubs long-term like that, it’s great for the game.

“The clubs that are successful, Manchester United and Arsenal, over the years they’ve stuck with their managers – not that they’ve had any reason not to stick with them, they’ve both been fantastic. David could manage anywhere, there’s no doubt about it.”

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger told Sky Sports: “ Knowing how much effort you put in on a daily basis, when a guy lasts 10 years somewhere you have to give him credit because we suffer a lot,”

“ We put a lot of effort and dedication in and our job is a real sacrifice of your life. So when a guy makes that for 10 years at the club and gets the results that Moyes has made, he deserves a huge credit.”

Respect

At 48 years of age David Moyes has earned the respect of a lot of his more experienced colleagues for the job he has done at Goodison. Anybody who lasts ten years at a club in the top flight in any country these days deserves credit.

The respect he has earned in the game so far has seen him linked with big jobs such Manchester United and Tottenham. I even heard a respected journalist talk about him as a potential Chelsea boss. However I sense that having not won a trophy at Everton he still has unfinished business with the Blues.

Hope

As a Evertonian born and bred I hope he stays at the club. However if he does move on in the near future I wish him all the best. He deserves to be successful for the sheer dedication and hard work he puts into his job.

The last ten years have came with lots of ups and a few downs for Everton Football Club but David Moyes has learned a lot. I hope he stays with the Blues for another ten years and finishes the job he has started.

How far can David Moyes take Everton?
