David Moyes: Jagielka staying, but Pienaar could leave

David Moyes reveals the club are prepared to offer Phil Jagielka a new deal, but the Everton boss says Steven Pienaar is likely to leave Goodison Park.

David Moyes has revealed Everton rejected an offer from Arsenal for Phil Jagielka last summer.

“It is true that we received an offer from Arsenal for Phil during the summer, but we were never tempted,” he said.

“It wasn’t a lot of money, not for a player like him. I had a word with him the day before we left for our pre-season trip to Australia and told him that, whatever level of interest there may be, it would take a lot more money than had been offered.

“He wasn’t a full England international when we signed him, but he is now. He has become a key player for us, and we will be offering him a new contract around Christmas time, or maybe just after.”

Nonetheless, it looks like Moyes will not be able to keep hold of Steven Pienaar.

“I would love Steven Pienaar to stay, but I am already resigned to losing him at the end of the season.

“If there is the slightest doubt in his mind about the future, I would hope he might still accept our offer, because the grass isn’t always greener. Mind you, I have already tried that line, and it hasn’t worked so far.”
