David Silva signs new five-year deal with Man City

Hull City v Manchester City - Barclays Premier League

Spain international midfielder David Silva has signed a new five-year deal with English Premier League champions Manchester City F.C.

Silva, 28, joined City from Valencia for a reported fee of £24 million in the summer of 2010 and has since established himself as one of Europe’s best playmakers.

The 28-year-old, who has won six major trophies — English Premier League (twice), Euro 2008, Euro 2012, FA Cup and World Cup (2010) for club and country — is absolutely delighted to commit his long-term future to the reigning league champions.

“From the moment I joined four years ago it has felt like a second home to me,” Silva said.

“On and off the pitch, I feel incredibly content and fulfilled professionally and personally, so why wouldn’t I want to stay and keep winning trophies with this fantastic team?

“Over the last four years, we have achieved so much together, establishing City as a dominating force in England.

“When I look around this dressing room I can see no reason why we won’t become one of the top teams in the world.

“It was a straightforward decision to extend my stay here and spend my peak years at Manchester City, a club with unbelievable fans who have always supported me.”

Silva tallied seven goals and nine assists in 27 league appearances for Manuel Pellegrini’s side last season.

Marcos Rojo hands in transfer request

Sporting Clube de Portugal defender Marcos Rojo has handed in a transfer request amid reports suggesting Manchester United have submitted a £16 million bid for the player.

The Argentina international, 24, has been linked with a host of top European clubs this summer, including Liverpool, but a move to Merseyside is all but off, with the Reds having just agreed £12 million fee for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno.

Rojo, who is also wanted by Napoli and Southampton, and team-mate Islam Slimani — a standout for Algeria at this summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil — have skipped training and will not feature against Academica at the weekend.

“They will not play on Saturday, against Academica. Nothing is at stake here,” Sporting president Bruno Carvalho told the club’s official website.

“Let’s see how long their disciplinary procedure will last. It will not be finished by Saturday.

“Both players made decisions that caused indiscipine inside the club. Right now, they face disciplinary action.

“They still have three years left on their contracts.

“Players have expectations, and Sporting will always try to see what can be done about that. But we will not give yield to pressure from agents and funds, we will not yield to attitudes that disrespect the club.”

Although United have already spent £27 million on England left-back Luke Shaw, Rojo would be a good addition to Louis van Gaal’s squad.

The versatile Argentina can play centre-back, left-back and even feature as an auxiliary defensive midfielder.
