Manchester City and Belgium playmaker Kevin De Bruyne has returned to training ahead of schedule after recovering from an injury sustained in August. De Bruyne was expected to be sidelined for three months.

However, the midfielder has returned quicker than expected. In fact, there are reports the 27-year-old could return for the Citizens midweek Champions League game against Hoffenheim. If the midfielder does not feature against the German side, then he could return for Pep Guardiola’s side in Sunday’s clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

Can be City’s most influential player

Manchester City’s squad is no doubt full of big players and star names. However, on his day, De Bruyne can be City’s most influential from his position in the middle of the park.

The Belgian international seems to see things that mere mortals do not, which makes him a special player. He has rare vision and football intelligence in a modern-day footballer.

In the last few years, De Bruyne has arguably become one of the best central midfielders in the world game. City are a good team without De Bruyne, but they are even better with the Belgian star pulling the strings.

Liverpool and Chelsea real threats this season

De Bruyne’s return to the City team could be even more vital with Liverpool and Chelsea looking like real threats to the Citizens retaining their crown this season. In truth, City ran away with the title last season.

Everybody else looked to be playing for Champions League places alone. However, this season Liverpool in particularly seem determined to push the Citizens close for the title, which is why City needs their best players fit and firing. De Bruyne is obviously one of the Citizens star players.

The men from Manchester need to get the Belgian back into the team and fully fit to aid their chances of retaining their crown this season. His presence in the team is likely to help the team pick up more points from difficult games.

Big game this weekend

De Bruyne’s return to training and from injury has been well timed. The Citizens face a difficult trip to title rivals Liverpool on Sunday, a game City are odds of 9/5 to win.

The Citizens are underdogs to win on Merseysiders after two defeats at Anfield last season in the Premier League and the Champions League. The Reds are formidable opponents on home soil and are enjoying a strong campaign so far this season.

While we are only early in the campaign, the game could prove vital in swinging momentum in favour of the winner of the clash.

De Bruyne’s return to the City squad is obviously not enough on its own to swing the game in the Citizens favour. However, if he does start the game, then City could well dominate that all-important centre of the pitch.

While City fans will be glad to see De Bruyne pull on a City shirt, I have to say many neutrals will also be glad to see the Belgian return to the football pitch, especially those who like fantasy football.

He is such a great player to watch and hopefully he will return to the City team in the near future. The midfielders return could just prove the difference between the Citizens retaining the crown or not this season.

Will Kevin De Bruyne return to City’s starting line-up for Sunday’s game at Liverpool?
