De Jong agrees to join Barcelona

Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong has chosen Barcelona as his next club, according to Spanish journalist David Sanchez, who adds that Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu will imminently travel to Amsterdam for the second time in a week, but this time to complete the deal. His story has been confirmed as true by Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

De Jong is one of the most sought-after players in Europe at the moment, and the battle for his services has been fierce. Barcelona were worried about potentially losing out on him to Paris Saint-Germain, doubting their own ability to compete with the French champions financially. They therefore sent a delegation to Amsterdam earlier this week to try and persuade the 21-year-old midfielder to move to Camp Nou.

Sporting director Eric Abidal reportedly said the club were still waiting for de Jong’s decision, but it seems they have finally been given the green light.

In addition to Sanchez’s claims, Balague says Barcelona are actually willing to pay more than PSG, a fee rumored to be €80 million. That, however, effectively rules them out of the running for defender Matthijs de Ligt.
