Defender Matthijs de Ligt and midfielder Frenkie de Jong, close friends as both players revealed several times, were of crucial importance for Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-final, with passage to the final slipping through their fingers in the last seconds of the two-legged clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
De Jong’s future was already known at that moment – he was on his way to Barcelona, where he says his adaptation has been ‘almost perfect’. Things weren’t as clear for De Ligt, who was subsequently the subject of a transfer saga that lasted throughout the summer. In the end, De Jong’s new club was among those snubbed by the centre-back as he opted to join Juventus.
As he told De Telegraaf (via Marca), De Jong believes De Ligt’s choice to go to Turin was the right one at the time, but he also believes it doesn’t mean he won’t swap the Allianz Stadium for Camp Nou at some point in the future.
